It shows different forms of this improvised grenade. Apparently these were used at the Verdun battle.

I got the pictures below from Peter.
These "Ersatz" grenades were found on a WW1 battlefield, in different sizes. All were found filled with normal gunpowder.
The bodies were made from Pipe-fittings, some marked "Georg Fischer" (still exists today in switzerland)-you can read this
on some fittings. The diameter of the parts (used for water pipes and so on) is stamped on to them (most 1 1/2" or 1 1/4").
Some where closed with a wooden plug, others with a screw cap of steel, in which holes have been drilled for the fuze.
